4.2. Public Hearing to consider an update to Title 17 of the Orange Municipal Code (OMC) to amend provisions relating to number of chickens allowed on residential properties and setback requirements; and finding of CEQA exemption.
Good afternoon members of the Planning Commission,
I own a handful of chickens at my residence at S Shaffer St/E Maple Ave. I agree with the staff's recommendation and observations regarding increasing the flock number to an even number of hens (6). Even through roosters do play an important role in larger flocks, a majority of homes in Orange are too close in proximity and are not large enough to offset the noise of a crowing rooster. The change in coop location standards is much more sensible to the reality of lot shapes and their proximity to neighboring occupied structures.
I will not be present for the meeting, but any follow-up questions can be directed to my attached supporting document.
