2. PUBLIC COMMENTS
At this time, members of the public may address the Council on matters not listed on the agenda within the subject matter jurisdiction of the City Council, provided that NO action may be taken on off-agenda items unless authorized by law. Public Comments are limited to three (3) minutes per speaker unless a different time limit is announced.
I would like to address the city council regarding an idea for the 3rd of July 250tu Celebration.
As we approach the 250th anniversary of our nation's independence, I believe it is important that our community commemorate this historic milestone in a meaningful way. While I understand that the traditional fireworks show has been canceled due to budget constraints, I would encourage the City to consider hosting an alternative celebration for residents.
One possible option would be a community block party or picnic at one of our local parks, perhaps at the same location where the fireworks show has traditionally been held. The event could feature inflatable play areas for children, food trucks, family-friendly activities, and the inflatable movie screen previously used for Movies in the Park. A patriotic and family-oriented film such as The Sandlot could be shown in the evening.
Additionally, the City could designate a supervised area where residents may safely use legal fireworks in accordance with local regulations. Having a limited presence from our Police and Fire Departments would help ensure public safety while also providing an opportunity for community engagement. It could even be an event where first responders are encouraged to attend with their families.
To keep costs low, the City could seek sponsorships from local businesses. For example, an inflatable rental company may be willing to provide equipment in exchange for promotional opportunities. Likewise, food trucks could be invited to participate without vendor fees, allowing them to benefit from the event while generating local sales tax revenue. That revenue could help offset some of the costs associated with staffing and event operations.
I believe a community-centered celebration such as this would provide residents with an opportunity to come together, celebrate our nation's 250th birthday, and maintain a valued tradition in a fiscally responsible manner.
